Description

“Phonics” by Devon Barnes is designed to help students learn sound - letter association. To learn how to read and spell, we need to know what sound, or sounds, each letter or combinations of letters in the English alphabet makes.

This sound-letter knowledge is known as phonics.

When we speak English, we make 44 different speech sounds. These sounds are called phonemes. To learn to read we need to know how these sounds are represented by letters. As we have more sounds than the 26 alphabet letters, we often combine letters to represent sounds. In the English language, these combinations can be confusing because English has evolved from many older languages.

This book contains videos of each of the 44 speech sounds, grouped in single, two, three and four letter combinations. Learners are able to tap the sound samples over and over again and then practice saying the sounds as they hear the sound and see the letters presented to them. Tables summarising the letter combinations, sounds and word examples are given at the beginning of each chapter.

“Phonics” is a valuable resource for all students of the English language.
